Tour Narrative Introduction
Rome has left an indelible print on Europe, shaping so many of its cultural, political and religious institutions. From the language which has peppered all modern idioms, to the architecture and engineering which has shaped our cities and the art and literature which inspired luminaries from Dante to Michelangelo, Rome is at the very core of what Europe is. At its height, the Roman empire spanned from Britain to Syria and comprised about 70 million people, around a fifth of the world’s population at the time. The Empire was not only enormous in size but astonishing in its longevity, officially falling only in 1453, when Constantinople was conquered by Ottoman forces led by Mehmed II, himself a classical scholar. With the importance of Christianity as a religious and cultural force, Rome has continued to exert a lasting influence to this day.
In order to understand the importance of Roman civilisation, one has to trace its development back to its beginnings. The city, dubbed the caput mundi or capital of the world, was able to develop this empire in no small part because it had acquired so much of its culture and know-how from earlier civilisations, notably from Greeks and Etruscans. Greeks who settled southern Italy included some of the most important scholars in the Hellenic world, including the philosophers Parmenides and Zeno, both from Elea. Magna Graecia, the name Rome gave to the Greek part of Italy, also produced some of the most beautiful monuments and works of art in the Mediterranean. Rome lay between Italian Greece and the homeland of the Etruscans, the Italic people who dominated Italy from the Po Region to Capua, just north of Naples.
Rome was intrinsically shaped by the fact that it was caught in the trade between these two great peoples and by the fact that it was ruled by Etruscans in the 6th century. So much, from its sewage system and its aqueducts, as well as its religion and architecture was shaped by Etruscans, while its literature and thought were indelibly influenced by Greece. Alongside these, Rome shared a common history with Italians, such as the Lucanians, Samnites and Latin, who neighboured them.
Our journeys weave together three essential elements: the insight of world-class experts, a discreet layer of exclusive, behind-the-scenes experiences, and meaningful moments of connection with fellow travellers. This combination creates a richly textured program where learning, discovery, and shared enjoyment come together to form an unforgettable, multidimensional travel experience.
Key Location Insights
This tour explores this development of Rome, allowing you to grasp the key monuments and artefacts which helped shape the city. You will be able to appreciate the contribution which Greeks made to Rome, as well as understand the impact which Etruscans had on the very fabric of Rome. The tour starts both chronologically and south of Rome, with the magnificent monuments located in Paestum, as well as the many painted tombs from the Greek and Lucanian periods which show how Roman notions of heroism, warfare and religion derived from this area. Not far from Paestum, we explore the astounding Vesuvian towns, Pompeii and Herculaneum, as well as suburban villas near them, which allow us to not only to see how Rome shared a common culture with other Italians, but give us an important glimpse into everyday life in Rome. These towns tell us everything from how traffic circulated, how the rich and poor lived cheek by jowl, how literate they were and how industries were crammed into houses. Travelling up the Appian Way, we explore the important city of Capua, whose enormous amphitheatre was fundamental to the development of gladiatorial games. Reaching Rome, we first explore the wonderful National Etruscan Museum Villa Giulia to explore these First Lords of Italy, the Italic people whose influence spanned most of the Italian peninsula. We continue this exploration with a visit to one of the most important Etruscan sites, the extraordinary city of Caere, now called Cerveteri. Here we explore the Banditaccia cemetery, filled with round tombs reminiscent of later Roman tombs, including Augustus’ mausoleum. Our exploration of Rome is exhaustive. We explore the heart of Rome, exploring the narrative of its myths located in the Palatine and Velabrum which recounted the foundation of the city. We also examine imperial messaging, from the grandeur of the emperors’ palaces, including Nero’s Golden House, to the monuments they erected to promote and justify their rule, such as the spectacular Colosseum and exquisite Ara Pacis. Finally, the tour goes behind the scenes to explore the everyday, travelling to Ostia and to Monte Testaccio to consider how Romans lived and to examine the vast trading network which enabled Rome’s huge population to stay alive. From examining monuments which allows us to understand the development of Rome to the in depth exploration of buildings and artefacts which enables us to grasp of how the city worked, this tour permits us not only to better grasp the essence of Roman civilisation but allows us to understand Europe and western history.
